Chilean education

Chilean education is discriminatory. Many times it is said that exist an education to rich people and other education to poor people, because on the one hand the public education in Chile is so deficient in infrastructure, in learning tools and in the curriculum. And on the other, the private (and “good”) education is inaccessible to most students. For that reason your education depending of your socioeconomic level. If you want to access a good level of education you have to pay for it, but if you don’t have the money to pay, I’m sorry you have to settle with a deficient and bad education. The education in Chile needs a reform to stop segregating students by socioeconomic status.

Immigration in Chile

The immigration in Chile has caused a lot of instability in the migrant population. Many investigations and testimonies have shown that the working and housing conditions are very deficient to migrants, especially to Haitian population, because many times the people take advantage of their needs and abuse by charging excessive prices for precarious homes or with exhausting and low-paying jobs. Also that has caused discriminatory practices related with racist attitudes by Chilean people and is common to hear things like “they come to ‘steal’ our work” and many degrading insults about their skin color.

With that attitudes and deficient living conditions has made it clear that immigration protection policies are needed in the country.

My Bio-data

Catalina Tapia is a fourth year student of the Sociology degree at University of Chile who was born in Santiago de Chile in March 1999. She is the oldest of two sisters and the first in her family to go to university. She is defined as an average student with good skills to understanding easily and teamwork. At present, Catalina is learning a third language (other than Spanish and English) which she likes very much: Portuguese and thinking about her seminar topic.

When she has free time she likes to exercise to balance the time she spends sitting reading or studying. Recently Catalina spends time cooking healthy recipes with her family because they are trying to lead a healthier life.

Within their topics of interest are the social reintegration, migration and rural problems. In the future she would like to work in public sector, but also she would like to venture into the private sector. Catalina has ambitious projects because with her formation she hopes to be able to give back her knowledge to the population and contribute to improve people’s quality of life. Also when Catalina finishes her studies she pretends to work hard to be able to take her family on a trip to Rapa Nui.
