Writing an essay about my career

¿What is the sociology? ¿What is the job of a sociologist? Many times, I have heard questions like these from my friends and family, but I have to say that far from finding answers, this raises my own questions about the career that I choose.

In this essay, I will defend the idea that the sociology is a social area full of theory, but it is fully understood in practice. First, I am going to explain some limitations of sociology to continue what I consider real sociology.

In the academy, is very easy define sociology with theoretical references and a long debate can be generated about it. The schools and theoretical lines are many, but in my opinion, this is limited to a uniquely abstract dimension of this social science.

On the one hand, I recognize a “risk” when we investigate about any topic, because a lot of times we “fall” in academicism and technical term. This is a disadvantage because generate a kind of distance between the academy and the people or phenomenon that we study even when our knowledge and studies must be at the service of them.

On the other hand, I think the sociology is created among all society. When you investigate a social group or an institution or any phenomenon, you must go with a disposition to learn from them. The real sociological knowledge is created by the hand of the people with which you are. For that reason, is into the practice and in the contact with people where you are making sociology, always thinking about their well-being and with a view that offers real solutions to the social problems they face.

As a summary, the sociology cannot be restricted to an academy area. The sociology must provide solutions to social problems and contribute to generating new and better public policies that approach on the needs of people.

My Report

Introduction

The intention of this report is describe my experience about my six weeks work at the Zuñiga’s School that was very rewarding.

Location, facilities available and more

First of all the Zúñiga’s School is a rural establishment located in San Vicente de Tagua Tagua and is well-known for its “Agro Parque” where there is an organic garden, wetland and others spaces. There was where I work with others five classmates and with the 7th grade children of the school. They were very kind, because shared their classroom to we could keep our belongings. Also, when we arrived, my colleagues and I spend the night in their classroom. That was a little uncomfortable but so funny. Another aspect to consider and for which I am very grateful was the fact that the school provided us the lunch! We didn’t expect that.

Working hours and dress code

Our working hours were from 10:00 until 14:00 hours. In that time we were talking about what’s mean the Agro Parque for their meanwhile we worked the land. For that reason, we didn’t have a dress code, just comfortable clothes.

Future career

I found my time at the Zúñiga’s School very rewarding, because I’ve never been work with children before and that was a challenge for me. Also know news teaching methodologies different from traditional space helps you to open your mind especially to sociology students who must be connected with different realities.

Conclusion

I think that we like students, intellectuals or whatever shouldn’t fall into belief that we know all the knowledge and that we have to teach others. It is important that we learn from others, because the real knowledge is in the contact with other people and realities. For that reason I recommend this work.

Technological advances make life better for everyone, true or false?

The technological advances surprise us increasingly in different areas like education, security and health. Without a doubt that new tools help and support to make better different services. But how real is the phrase “make life better for everyone”?

In this essay, I will defend that the idea of that phrase is completely wrong and I am going to base my arguments in one principal topic: unequal access to basic services.

In the middle of the 21st century is tempting think that the most of population have guaranteed access to basic services, especially in a globalized world. But in countries like Chile and others where the inequality is so profound that is not guaranteed for low income people. For example, in Chile the public health is below than private health and even though technological advances are introduced in public sector, the health care is worse because the professionals are less and also, the technological tools never will be the same of the private health.

In actual times in pandemic the situation is more critical because the people who don’t have the essential tools to “work from home” or “online classes” like a computer, Wi-Fi or even a phone is badly affected, especially monetarily.

As a summary, the inequality is a factor to considering when we talk about technological advances because that are not guaranteed for all population. The continuous advances are increasing the digital divide and make life worse for a sector of population. Unfortunately, the technological access has never been the same for everyone.
